Space photography from the ground up. The European Southern Observatory operates some of the world's most powerful telescopes in Chile's Atacama Desert. This collection features ESO's finest: the Horsehead Nebula, the Great Carina Nebula, the Pencil Nebula, the Tarantula Nebula, the Sombrero Galaxy (M104), and the dark nebula Barnard 68.

Why These Images Stand Out

ESO imagery offers a distinctive aesthetic — the ground-based perspective and different instruments produce colors and detail that complement Hubble and JWST photography.
